-Dead was the first demo recorded for "Freakshow".
-During the recording of "Freakshow," the original sound Shaun wanted to create was much more industrial-metal. Dead has had several different iterations, finally settling on the version present on this album.
-Shaun Roland describes the track as such:
"The original version is sort of like NIN and Rammstein having an awkward conversation while listening to the Crow soundtrack. It wasn't really the sound I wanted. I feel like the final version is much closer to what I had in mind, and captures the song's spirit much more effectively."
-During the first chorus, the line cuts off (Either way, my heart is...). This was done as a joke directed at Spencer Pellant, friend of Shaun Roland. When listening to the demo, Spencer would often say that the word "Dead" (That would originally come after "is") was his favorite part. Shaun thought it would be funny to leave the line trailing off, so that Spencer, whenever listening to it, would be compelled to complete the line. Shaun is cited as saying:
"The joke is much funnier in execution than in explanation."
-The entire bassline for Dead was rewritten by Cody Brummett, to be much more intricate than "Shaun's shitty shadowbass."
lyrics
My soul is aching,
My hands are shaking,
I feel like making my move
Like touching an angel,
But I'm just a stranger,
My heartache is bleeding through
I hate because I hurt
I hurt because I'm wrong
Wrong to have been hurt by those I hate for so damn long
Nearly drowned myself in bleach,
Scrubbed my skin until it bled,
But I can't wash away these scars, can't bring my heart back from the dead
Was it a whisper or a scream, or the echo of a dream that I once had?
Either way, my heart...is...
My body's shivering, broken and withering,
The end of everything is near
I'm growing tired of fools and liars,
My passion is insincere
I hate because I hurt
I hurt because I'm wrong
Wrong to have been hurt by those I hate for so damn long
Nearly drowned myself in bleach,
Scrubbed my skin until it bled,
But I can't wash away these scars, can't bring my heart back from the dead
Was it a whisper, or a scream, or the echo of a dream that I once had?
Either way, my heart is dead
I hate because I hurt, I hurt because I'm wrong,
Wrong to have been hurt by those I hate for so damn long,
Want to tear myself apart, rip these thoughts out of my head,
But it won't fix the damage done, won't bring my heart back from the dead...
I hate because I hurt
I hurt because I'm wrong
Wrong to have been hurt by those I hate for so damn long
Nearly drowned myself in bleach,
Scrubbed my skin until it bled,
But I can't wash away these scars, can't bring my heart back from the dead
I hate because I hurt, I hurt because I'm wrong,
Wrong to have been hurt by those I hate for so damn long,
Want to tear myself apart, rip these thoughts out of my head,
But it won't fix the damage done, won't bring my heart back from the dead
