-Porcelain, during its' conception, was meant to be a cover of Make Do And Mend's "Drown In It." During the recording phase, the track took on a sort of life of its' own, and "Porcelain" was born. The influence of "Drown In It" is very present and noticeable in the track, and is openly admitted by Shaun Roland:
"It was never actually meant to be its' own song. I didn't in a million years fathom that Starving In Style would be like, a thing, so I just recorded what I felt the song signified to me. When we got together, and it became one of our more popular songs, I showed my bassist the original source material, and he was like "Oh, that's gonna be a problem later down the road." So I try to make sure EVERYONE knows that I wasn't trying to be sneaky and pull some, like, MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice shit."
-Writer Shaun Roland's fear of the success of the song lead to him writing another song with a very similar theme, "Lament," as proof to himself that he could write a song in the same vein that didn't borrow so heavily from external influences. Lament became the number one song regionally on Reverbnation charts. A lyrical reference to Porcelain is present in the post chorus and end of Lament.
-This track features a good friend of the bands', Anne Benest, of the bluegrass band "The Boondogglers."
lyrics
I can't shake this
I'm so tired of faking,
I can't fix me
I'm so tired of breaking
I live on second chances, but there are none for the times that I have lost,
It's all just gone
I drink and fuck the pain away but sometimes I get trapped inside my thoughts
For way too long
Oh, I am my own worst enemy,
But when I'm down, don't comfort me,
Always was and always will be
Made of Porcelain
Make it like it was before,
Walk right out that fucking door,
Go turn somebody else into Porcelain
I can't feel it,
I just feel the numbness
I can't take it,
I just feel the madness
I live on past regrets but if I could I wouldn't trade them for the world,
They're all I have
How's life in your ivory tower, reliving your finest hour, no
I think you're sad
Oh, I am my own worst enemy,
But when I'm down, don't comfort me,
Always was and always will be
Made of Porcelain
Make it like it was before,
Walk right out that fucking door,
Go turn somebody else into Porcelain
Oh, I am my own worst enemy,
But when I'm down, don't comfort me,
Always was and always will be
Made of Porcelain
Make it like it was before,
Walk right out that fucking door,
Go turn somebody else into Porcelain
Oh, I am my own worst enemy,
But when I'm down, don't comfort me,
Always was and always will be
Made of Porcelain
Make it like it was before,
Walk right out that fucking door,
Go turn somebody else into Porcelain
